Driving a motorbike in america with a British license?

I have a British driving license and I’m going to conert it to an international one so I can drive in America. I’m going for 6 months.

I havent done the test here in the UK that allows you to drive a motorbike so I am wondering if America has a simliar test or would I just be able to hop on a bike and use my Driving Lisence for my car?

Thanks and sorry if a bit confusing :3

Most (maybe all) US states require drivers to pass a separate test to be authorized to drive a motorcycle. You might get away without having the motorcycle endorsement on your UK license, or you might not. Best is to take the test in the UK and get the endorsement.

Note that an “International Driving License” (IDL) is not required in the USA and is only important if the national license is not in English. However, some car rental agencies require international visitors to have an IDL regardless of the language of the national language.

Also, if you are traveling to the USA on the Visa Waiver Program you can only be in the USA for 90 days at a time. You have to leave every 90 days, and going to Canada, Mexico, and most Caribbean islands does NOT count as “leaving the USA” for Visa Waiver Program purposes.

The motorcycle theory test consists of two parts: multiple choice part and the hazard perception part.

The motorcycle test is a computer-based tests at various testing centers around the country.

This section is designed to test your understanding of the theory behind driving. Motorcycle theory test before you start to get instructions on how the test works.

You can also choose to go through a practice session of multiple choice questions to get used to the design of the test. At the end of exercise the real test begins.

The second part of the motorcycle test is hazard perception. This section is designed to test your awareness of potential dangers during driving. You will be shown 14 clips of 1 minute each with 15 hazards

You will not be able to see your answers to the hazard perception test, which by the way, you only have one chance to respond to developing country risk.

At the end of risk awareness Part of the theory test you are asked to respond to any questions a customer survey.

400CC motorbike on CBT test?

i am potentially buying a Honda BROS 400CC motorbike very soon, as the DVLA website and another brokers (which i am not buying from) say that as long as it is under 33Bhp that you can ride it, i am 17, also the brokers website said that the Honda BROS and the Honda CB 400’s do not need limiting as they already meet the spec for a CBT rider of 17, is this true?

bottom line…. the most you can ride at 17 in the uk on a CBT is a 125.
when i was 16 (5years ago) i bought a 50cc scooter and when i turned 17 i did my bike test (the same one you will do) which allowed me to ride any motorcycle which does not make more than 33bhp.
soooooooo like you i bought a bros 400 (nice choice by the way, bullet proof) because it was exactly 33bhp. in theory you could buy a gsxr 1000 or any huge bike…. as long as you get a mechanic to restrict it and he gives you documentation to prove it.

on your cbt you will have to do it on a 125….. the only other choice is a 50.

after cbt you will need to do a theory and then practical test (but hurry up, the pratical test gets harder from september because method of testing changes.)

cbt £100
theory £40
3 days bike training with a school £300
practical (usually included for free by the training school) £50

your first legal ride out on your own…. PRICELESS.

These tips resulted from a detailed analysis of all accidents involving a motorcycle, which occurred in Buckinghamshire within the 3 year period 1.5.94 to 30.4.97.

BikeSafe is an initiative run by Police Forces around the United Kingdom who work with the whole of the biking world to help to lower the number of motorcycle rider casualties. Bikesafe publishes information for bike drivers.

Following are some tips for motorcycle drivers:

You may find these tips helpful if you are learning to drive or preparing for your motorcycle practical test.

A. Junctions -

The most common accident type was another vehicle crossing the motorcyclist’s path to enter or leave a side road or private drive. At roundabouts, the most common accident type was another vehicle entering the roundabout in the path of a motorcyclist already on the roundabout. Over 1 in 5 of all motorcycle accidents were of this type, where the motorcyclist had right of way.

Tips -

B. Overtaking -

About 1 in 5 of motorcyclist accidents involve overtaking. Almost 1 in 3 of the overtaking accidents involved motorcyclists passing stationary or slow moving vehicles e.g. in traffic queues, where the most common accident type was another vehicle turning right (either into or out of a side road or private drive) or U turning, across the motorcyclists path.

In other overtaking accidents, the commonest accident type was when the overtaken vehicle turned right as he motorcyclist was overtaking.

Tips :

C. Bends
About 1 in 4 of motorcycle accidents occurred on bends.
Tips -

D. General riding

Many of the riders involved in accidents were not driving appropriately for the conditions, especially with regard to speed (in 1 in 4 of the accidents excess speed was a contributory factor).

Drivers of vehicles are often unaware of a motorcyclists presence. It is necessary for motorcyclists to become ‘defensive’ drivers in order to avoid becoming casualties.
